Jojoba Seed PodsWhat is Jojoba Oil?

Despite its scientific name Simmondsia chinensis, the plant is not native to China, but is endemic to southwestern North America, particularly the Sonoran, Colorado and Baja California deserts. The common name “Jojoba” originated from O'odham name Hohowi. Native Americans discovered the importance and versatility of jojoba. After heating jojoba seeds to soften them they then used a mortar and pestle to create a salve or buttery substance, which was then applied to the skin and hair to heal and condition. The O'odham people of the Sonoran Desert treated burns with an antioxidant salve made from a paste of the jojoba nut.

Jojoba Oil Properties

Jojoba oil, applied topically, may alleviate an oily hair condition and prevent the build-up of sebum on the scalp. By covering the scalp with jojoba oil it is believed that the natural production of sebum will decline. Jojoba oil can be used as a moisturizer, make-up remover, lip balm, hair conditioner, shave preparation and as a massage oil. Jojoba oil resembles sebum chemically and physically. It may alleviate the irritation associated with psoriasis and dry skin. Jojoba is an excellent carrier oil and is also used in bioresonance treatments for its ability to retain frequencies.

The Scientific Validation of Herbal Medicine. Keats Publishing Inc. New Canaan, Connecticut, USA. 1986:185-186. The author reports that although it is believed that coating the scalp with jojoba oil will reduce the endogenous production of sebum, this assertion has not been scientifically proven.
