Origanum vulgare is believed to be the superior species of Oregano for use in the preparation of oregano oil as this species contains much higher quantities of the two most active constituents - Carvacrol and Thymol. Oregano oil is one of the most effective antiseptic essential oils for most types of infections. In general, oregano (herb) has 3 to 20 times higher antioxidant activity than the other herbs studied, says Shiow Y. Wang, Ph.D., lead reseracher and a biochemist with the USDA's Beltsville Agricultural research Center in Beltville, Md.
