Wintergreen essential oil is made by steam distillation of the leaves. Methyl salicylate, the main chemical constituent of the oil, up to 95%.

The oil is used topically (must be diluted) or in aromatherapy for muscle and joint discomfort and also has many other uses.

Oil of wintergreen is also used in many other applications, chewing gum, mouthwash, toothpastes and other dental hygiene products.
