Rodales Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs says on page 66:
The active ingredients that make cascara such an effective laxative are two types of a substance called anthraquinone. The first type, free anthraquinone, causes an increased peristalsis, or movement, in the large intestine. The other type, sugar derivative, is absorbed in the digestive tract and circulated through the bloodstream. These sugar derivatives eventually reach a nerve center in the large intestine and trigger a laxative effect.
