Rodales Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs says on pages 188 and 189: Fennel has been used as a carminative, a weak diuretic, and a mild stimulant. Fennel tea is said to soothe the stomach. To the medieval mind, fennel was one of nine sacred herbs with the power to cure the nine causes of medieval diseases. Culpeper believed that fennel helped break kidney stones, quieted hiccups, prevented nausea and gout, cleared the liver and lungs, and served as an antidote to poisonous mushrooms.
