The seed of the horse chestnut contains several compounds, one of which is Escin. Escin has been found to close the small pores in the walls of veins, making them less permeable. This strengthens the vein walls and reduces the leakage of fluid into surrounding tissues. The bioflavanoid rutin works in much the same way but the anti-swelling activity of Escin has been found to be 600 times that of rutin. In simple terms, Escin can stop vein swelling and pain, as well as reduce the appearance of spider veins. As Escin is the most prominent ingredient and the main reason why most people take Horse Chestnut, we have chosen standardised extract over whole herb.
