Rodales Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs says on page 494: Uva-ursi's leaves and berries contain tannic and other acids and the glycoside arbutin, all of which give the herb its astringent and antiseptic properties. The plant's traditional uses make sense in light of its chemical makeup. The Chinese, Europeans, and American natives all considered it a kidney herb. They prescribed leaves and fresh berries for treating kidney stones, bladder infections, incontinence, and similar ailments.
