An imbalance of acidity/alkalinity creates a favourable condition for growth of bacteria, yeast and other harmful organisms. All the cells that make up the human body are slightly alkaline, and must remain so in order to function and remain healthy. However their cellular activity creates acid and this acid is what gives the cell energy and function. As each alkaline cell performs its task of respiration, it secretes metabolic wastes, and these 'end products' of cellular metabolism are acid in nature.
Although these wastes are used for energy and function, they must not be allowed to build up. One example of this is the painful lactic acid which is created through exercise. The pH value of a bath is of special importance. It should be definitely higher than the pH value of the blood (7.37-7.43). A pH value of 8 is good, but 8.5 ? 9 is optimal.
