What is Vitamin B3 (Niacin)?

Vitamin B3 is a water soluble vitamin, meaning that it cannot be stored in the body and is acquired through diet. Other names for vitamin B3 are niacin and nicotinic acid.

The Role of Vitamin B3?

Vitamin B3 (Niacin) promotes energy production from food and is necessary to both the nervous and digestive system. Dietary sources: It can be found in the following foods: beef; pork; chicken; wheat and maize flour; eggs; and milk.

Niacin Flush

In some cases vitamin B3 in the form of niacin can cause a “niacin flush”, this is where the skin can turn red and cause the skin to feel warm, usually mild and transient. Other forms of vitamin B3 are non flush such as niacinamide.

Niacin Flush is unpredictable = Gentle heat that spreads or intense heat with itching / redness. To minimise the flush; Take with food specifically apples including skin. Taken 10 mins before B3 this extends transport time in the digestive tract without lessening beneficial effects as can non-flush versions. Alcohol / hot drinks / high fat / spicy food or snacks can increase strong flushing. Grapefruit / GF juice can exacerbate flushing. Small amounts of Niacin are found in some food – research Niacin Rich Foods.

If you would like to find out more on this subject, please see our blog post Vitamin B3 and the niacin flush

Warning

Do not take if history of  liver or kidney disease, gastric ulcers, blood clotting disorders, glaucoma, gout, low blood pressure, niacin sensitivity, diabetes, pregnant or breast feeding. Stop 3 weeks before surgery.

Niacin Equivalent (NE)

We are are required by the UK government to express the weight of Niacin as mg NE. The "NE" stands for Niacin Equivalent. But do not panic as 1mg of Niacin = 1mg NE. However, you may also take the Amino Acid L-Tryptophan as part of your food supplement regime. If so, when calculating your intake of Niacin, please remember that 60mg = 1mg NE. (So, a supplement containing 500mg of L-Tryptophan would provide an additional 8.3mg NE to your NRV).

Health Leads Commitment to You.

We will not use known harmful additives, colourants, sweeteners, excipients such as magnesium stearate. Rarely we may have to use a natural filler but research carefully those we do use, such as organic rice flour. These efforts are born of our desire for good quality at the best price.
