Castor Oil plant with seed pods

What is Castor Oil?

Ricinus communis, the Castorbean or Castor-oil plant, is a species of flowering plant in the spurge family, Euphorbiaceae. Its seed is the Castor bean, which, despite its name, is not a true bean. The seeds contain between 40% and 60% oil that is rich in triglycerides, mainly ricinolein. The seed also contains ricin, a water-soluble toxin, which is also present in lower concentrations throughout the plant. Castor is indigenous to the southeastern Mediterranean Basin, Eastern Africa and India, and widely grown as an ornamental plant.

What does Castor Oil do?

Applied topically to the affected area, it reputedly alleviates the pain associated with rheumatism and rheumatoid arthritis. Anecdotal use is overwhelming that Castor oil eases pain and swelling. Castor oil is a mild laxative and a 100% natural way to relieve occasional constipation.
