What is Folate?

Folate is a water-soluble B vitamin. The total body content of Folate is estimated to be 10 to 30mg; about half of this amount is stored in the liver and the remainder in blood and body tissues. The EU NRV (Nutrient Reference Value) is 200mcg for adults and 400mcg for pregnant women.
Folate deficiency can result in many health problems. Low levels of Folate can also lead to homocysteine accumulation.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommend that “All women, from the moment they begin trying to conceive until 12 weeks of gestation, should take a Folic Acid supplement (400 μg Folic Acid daily). Women who have had a fetus diagnosed as affected by a neural tube defect or have given birth to a baby with a neural tube defect should: receive information on the risk of recurrence; be advised on the protective effect of periconceptional Folic Acid supplementation; be offered high-dose supplementation (5mg Folic Acid daily); and be advised to increase their food intake of Folate. ”
Low maternal Folate status is a risk factor in the development of neural tube defects in the developing foetus.

What does Folate do?

Folate is found in a wide variety of foods, notably dark green leafy vegetables, wheatgerm, brewers’ yeast and beef liver. It is frequently recommended to pregnant women.
It is necessary for the production of new DNA, and new DNA is needed for all new cells.
What is the difference between Folate and Folic Acid?
Folate is often used as a generic term for Vitamin B9. However, there is a clear distinction between Folate and Folic Acid. Folate occurs naturally in food, whereas Folic Acid is a synthetic form of the vitamin.
Folic Acid is synthetically produced, and used in fortified foods and supplements on the theory that it is converted into Folate. However, Folic Acid is a synthetic oxidized form, not significantly found in fresh natural foods. To be used it must be converted to tetrahydrofolate (tetrahydrofolic acid) by dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR). Increasing evidence suggests that this process may be slow in humans. Humans cannot synthesize folates; therefore, it has to be supplied through the diet to meet daily requirements.
Health Leads’ Folate is also known L-Methylfolate or 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF), which is considered a healthier alternative, to Folic Acid. 5-MTHF is equal to or even better than Folic Acid.

✔ 5-MTHF THE ACTIVE FORM OF FOLIC ACID - The terms folate/folic acid are often interchangeably used to describe B9, but they are not all the same. Supplements called "folic acid" likely only contain pteroylmonoglutamic acid, this form once consumed needs to be converted in the liver or other tissues to the active form 5-MTHF. Folate (5-MTHF) is the active form of folic acid called 5-MTHF (L-5-Methyltetrahydrofolate, L-Methylfolate), this is the biologically active form which is better absorbed.
