What is Xylitol?
Xylitol is a naturally formed carbohydrate found in many fruits and vegetables. Our own bodies make up to 15g per day! Xylitol looks like sugar and tastes like sugar but is actually good for us! With 39% less calories than sugar many people who are slimming use it as a substitute for sugar. But, by far, the best thing about xylitol is that it is non-toxic and healthy for the teeth as it has been shown to reduce tooth decay dramatically. One huge plus — xylitol is very slowly absorbed and metabolized by the body, resulting in very low changes in insulin. Due to this, xylitol will not raise your blood sugar like regular sugar. This is important for those suffering from diabetes, cardiovascular disease or metabolic syndrome.
Where does manufactured Xylitol come from?
Xylitol is found widely in nature. Apart from different types of fruits and vegetables, xylitol is also taken from birch bark. However, it is very important to remember that xylitol is a specific molecule. The xylitol extracted from one source is exactly the same as xylitol from any other source, just as the sugar (sucrose) extracted from beets is exactly the same as the sugar we get from sugar cane.
